Cardinal Alumni
The Corbett Cardinals have
enjoyed a proud tradition of turning out outstanding students
who have become extraordinary citizens for generations.
As an Alumni, you well know that being a Corbett Cardinal
means being a part of a family. Now take a moment to remember
back to your class of about fifty. You grew up together,
your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors and
friends all gave you outstanding community support. Today
with that same support, the classes of 2005, 2006 and
2007 have become the most successful in school history.
In fact, your own Red & Black have become a national
leader in public schools. Corbett made the news last year
by being ranked 216th in Newsweek magazine’s American’s
Best High Schools List. Corbett was in the top one-percent
of 25,000 US Public Schools based on Advanced Placement
tests per graduating seniors. This year they will climb
even higher into the top one-half of one percent.
As an Alumni you may remember how the student activities
and sports programs welcomed everyones participation.
Currently over 50% of all students participate in at least
one sport. Students who participate in athletics are provided
many opportunities that cannot be duplicated in the class
room. Leadership, Teamwork, Self-Confidence, and Regular
Physical Exercise are just a few of the many positive
aspects of athletics. Corbett has always been as fierce
as the East wind in their fight to provide the best for
its kids, but now we need your help.
Recent budget cuts at Corbett have eliminated funding
for all Junior Varsity and Middle School sports. In response
to these cuts, determined parents and school staff have
formed CARDS, short for Corbett Athletics Resource Development
Society. Our goal is to raise $80,000 this year. This
money will be used for scholarships for athletes who are
unable to pay the sports’ participation fees, official’s
fees, equipment, uniforms and transportation. Although
the current State Government’s promises of increased
funding for schools will help the over all school budget
it will NOT replace funding of the Junior Varsity and
Middle School Sports Programs.
Funding for Middle Schoo, Junior Varsity and High Schools
sports comes from the Booster Club through Two Primary
Sources. The first is a Participation Fee paid by students
for each sport. The second comes directly from money raised
by the CARDS–Corbett Schools Booster Club.
The existence of Corbett Middle
School and Junior Varsity athletics is entirely dependent
on the ability of the Booster Club to fund it, and that
is where we need your support. If you are already a member
or have contributed in some way we would like to say Thank
You and we are grateful for your support. If you haven't
had the opportunity to show your support, then we hope
that you will take this moment and join
many others in making a contribution to this important
cause. We ask that you remember your days as a Cardinal
and what the Corbett community meant to you and, in turn,
give a piece of that gift back to todays Corbett kids.
Thank you for your time and
consideration,
Tom Layton, Class of 1975
Michael Sommerville, Class
of 2006
